This is a highly readable guide to startups, and particularly relevant to high school, college students and recent graduates who are interested in entrepreneurship as a career. Hou's advice comes in the "tip" form, allowing readers to jump to topics that they find most relevant. What I find most valuable about the book is Hou shares her personal experiences starting her own startup and draws on the experiences of others as well. Having attempted running a performing arts related social enterprise, I appreciate Hou's specificity in providing examples of situations and how one might deal with them (eg. how to write a sample email to a potential investor in tip 58) - this is a refreshing change compared to the very general and big picture advice in many entrepreneurship related books.Product details

Such a great collection of the experiences and wisdom of many entrepreneurs that I can't help but feel inspired as well as informed.
Very well structured book, with concise and specific advise from new entrepreneurs! Exactly what I needed.
Such a timely and relevant book! This touches on a lot of questions and conversations that are coming up in the lives of SO many people I know! I'm sure anyone would find the insights offered here incredibly useful and interesting. Definitely worth sharing with the entrepreneur in your life. (And don't we all have at least one entrepreneur in our lives these days?)
I learned a lot from this book, and I really appreciated the quick pace of the book and the brutal honesty of the entrepreneurs who were interviewed.
This book is great for anyone who aspires to start his/her own business or is the process of doing so. In addition to the stories from the author and other young entrepreneurs, the book provides almost an encyclopedia of dos and don'ts for startups. Very insightful and comprehensive.
Startups Demystified celebrates the bravery and ingenuity of millennials who want to think -- and go -- outside the box. It's accessible, well organized, and welcoming; it simplifies even the most daunting tasks an individual may face when pursuing their dream. It's no wonder that the author Barbara Hou has had such a successful career as a lawyer, entrepreneur, Harvard PhD candidate, and author! Anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit who is interested in forging a path beyond the corporate or academic ladders would benefit from this book -- I know I sure have!
I enjoyed reading this book to gain a quick understanding of the issues that young entrepreneurs may go through, and to have frameworks to understand such issues. I also liked the personal tone and style of the writing. I think some of the tips in this book are useful not just for people who are engaging in formal startups, but they are useful for people in other settings and situations in which they are climbing up the career ladder, building support for causes, or serving in leadership capacities.
